Belly lift

Following significant weight change it is common to be left with excess, sagging skin in the abdominal area. This is particularly common for women after pregnancy, or massive weight loss and can also occur naturally as a result of the ageing process. An abdominoplasty removes the excess skin from above the waistline, tightens the muscles and fascia of the abdominal wall, and restores a tighter, flatter-looking stomach. The procedure is often combined with liposuction to remove fat and improve the contours of the abdomen. Unfortunately, it is not possible to “smooth” the skin of the abdomen and achieve firm skin with the help of sports, cream or a diet. In these cases, a tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, is the solution to this problem.

General information

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty consists of removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen. There are mainly three types of abdominoplasty: The mini abdominoplasty where the skin and fat of the belly is prepared up to the navel. The navel is not transposed in this case. The classic abdominoplasty, in which the abdominal skin and the fat layer are prepared up to the height of the rib cage and the navel is transposed. The T-shaped abdominoplasty, in which a classical abdominoplasty is combined with an additional vertical incision.

Before the procedure

During the first consultation, we make sure that a tummy tuck is the right choice for you. To this end, we clarify questions about your general health, measure your body weight, height, fat percentage, the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer and the presence of a hernia in your abdomen. The areas to be treated are drawn and presented to you in front of a mirror. We inform you about the surgery, discuss the additional examinations required for the operation, explain the forms of anaesthesia that can be used and give an overview of the various stages of the healing process. In order not to endanger the wound healing process it is strongly recommended not to smoke for about 14 days before and after the operation.

During the procedure

Just before the operation, we draw in a standing position, the exact areas of skin and fat that will be removed. A photo documentation is also carried out beforehand. The scar will be located in the area of the caesarean section scars and will therefore be covered by the underwear or bikini. The classic abdominoplasty procedure takes about 2-3 hours under general anesthesia, less time for a mini abdominoplasty. The length depends on the amount of skin and fat to be removed. In the classic abdominal lift, the belly button is transposed. We use a special technique that completely hides the scar on the navel.

After the procedure

You will wear a compression garment for at least 6 weeks. During the first 3 weeks, you should not over-exert the tension zones in the lower abdomen. This is the reason why you should adopt a curved posture and make sure that you only sleep on your back. If you suffer from constipation after the operation, mild laxatives and a suitable diet will help. Sport is only allowed after 8 weeks. Good scar care with specific creams, silicone patches and massage is also recommended after 4 weeks. To ensure a stable result after surgery, it is important not to expect major weight changes after surgery.

Risks and side effects

A tummy tuck can lead to bruising, swelling and fluid accumulation (seroma). Sensory disturbances and scarring are also possible. Thromboses and embolisms are very rare.
