General information

With age, the tissue of the eyelids changes. These changes can also be hereditary. The result is excess skin with a feeling of heaviness and pressure on the eyes. Irritation and inflammation can sometimes also occur in the folds of the eyelid skin, caused by maceration of the excess skin. In advanced cases, the excess skin can begin to interfere with the eyelashes, which is often a problem for makeup wearers. Not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also when reading or driving, upper eyelid drooping can cause difficulties for those affected, as the field of vision is severely restricted. The procedure consists of removing the excess skin (dermatochalisis) from the eyelid. An upper eyelid lift will make you look as fresh as you feel: The pressure on the eyelids is gone, as well as the tired look.

Before the procedure

During the first consultation, we make sure that upper eyelid correction is a treatment that meets your expectations. To do this, we clarify questions about your general health, measure excess skin and the presence of fat bags on the eyelids. We inform you about outpatient surgery, discuss the additional examinations necessary for the operation, explain the applicable forms of anaesthesia and give an overview of the various stages of the healing process. In order not to endanger the wound healing process, we strongly recommend not to smoke for about 14 days before and after the eyelid surgery.

During the procedure

Before the eyelid surgery, the existing excess skin of the upper eyelid is carefully planned and photographically documented. For a harmonious and natural result, the eyelids are marked in a lying position. The drawings are very important and several checks of the drawings are carried out in the lying and standing position. Usually the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, or sedation or general anaesthesia if desired. Subsequently, the excess skin is removed with precision. Extremely fine, continuous threads are used for the suture, which are embedded in the skin and are therefore not visible during your blepharoplasty (intracutaneous).

After the procedure

During the healing phase you should wear sunglasses to avoid straining your eyes. The eye area should be cooled with a cold pack after the procedure to reduce bruising and swelling. The swelling around the eyes and bruising will disappear on its own within 1 to 2 weeks. You should avoid exercise for 3 weeks. Wearing contact lenses is also not advisable. When you return home, you should use a higher, well-filled pillow and avoid creams and ointments around the eyelids for the first two weeks after surgery. The first follow-up visit, including removal of stitches, usually takes place 5-7 days after surgery. It is advisable to massage the scar with an apricot-based ointment 2 weeks after the removal of the stitches used in your blepharoplasty.

Risks and side effects

If the eyes feel slightly dry immediately after the procedure, this is a normal feeling. This feeling will disappear after a few days. Bruising and swelling occur regularly but usually disappear within 1 to 2 weeks. After surgery, milia often form around the scars. These small nodules usually disappear in the following weeks without treatment. Infections and hematomas are very rare. If asymmetry still exists after 6 months, it can be corrected.
